Description: People have always made art and people have always collected art. But it is only recently that collecting became possible for everyone, not just the very rich. Indeed, collecting has never been more popular, as the rise of art fairs, antique fairs, television programmes devoted to finding treasures in your attic and much more attests. And not only is collecting fun, it could be potentially very profitable, too. But where to start? These days everything is collectable, from Old Masters to 1950s kitchenalia and it can be bewildering when you start out. And not just when you start out. Even experienced collectors need some help and guidance and How To Collect Art provides exactly this. Author and collecting expert Virginia Blackburn takes you through everything you need to know, tackling not only mainstream fields such as paintings, furniture, china and statuary, but through antiquities, modern sculpture, Sailors’ Valentines, street art and much, much more. This is a comprehensive look at many and varied fields of collecting, for amateur and professional alike. Virginia also explains how to educate yourself in your chosen field, and where to go to find the art you buy, covering galleries, auctions, degree shows and more. She explains how, when and where to bargain, looks at ways of displaying your collection and helps you get into the mindset of a collector. Art may be for art’s sake, but it provides the rest of us with a lot of pleasure too.

Description: With Natural Kitchen Dyes you can explore the magical world of natural dyes, without the need of a garden full of dye plants. Our kitchens are a great source of natural dye colours, from vegetable peels that create blush pinks and peaches, fruit skins that make lemon yellows, a green dye sourced from carrot tops, dried spices and used tea bags to create vibrant yellows, rich terracottas and deep browns. Natural Kitchen Dyes takes you through the exciting process of creating these wonderful natural colours, dyeing fabric with the dyes and suggests ingenious ways to get your hands on some natural dye sources. Accompanying the natural dye recipes in the book are ten environmentally conscious projects, which have been created not only to show off the natural dyes beautifully, but to help eliminate waste. Several of the projects actually utilise waste that would otherwise be composted or recycled such as old clothes turned into bags and patchwork floor cushions, to dried pulses past their expiration date used to make a beaded necklace.

Description: Making is good for you. Exploring crafts can be relaxing and therapeutic : the projects in this book are accessible to anyone who is inspired to recycle old clothes and textiles into unique, decorative, useful projects. Our forbears improvised tools to recycle their worn clothes - mostly dark suiting or mill waste if they lived near a mill. Usually they made mats for their cold floors or as draft excluders across doors. Nowadays you can choose from so many more colours and textures - painting with rags! Try one project or more. You will be able to use the techniques to design and make your own one-off items for your home or as hand-made gifts. The techniques here are traditional and simple - you will be surprised at how drab fabrics become transformed. Simple designs work best and you can even improvise as you work. If a fabric runs out, then use another - I call that organic design! Hooking is the best technique for pictorial detail and different techniques could be combined for original wall art. Historically, rugs were made by several people sitting round a horizontal frame with the children cutting the pieces of rag which were prodded into the hessian (burlap) backing to make a shaggy mat. There is a prodded project (for purists) but you can also achieve the same effect without a frame by progging, which can be done on table or thigh (carefully). Warning – this craft can be addictive!
